Destination Pick: Aleenta Phuket-Phang Nga Resort &

Taking the time out to get away and breathe is an essential practice in maintaining balance. Like most yogis, I often find this break on my mat, but when time permits, I like to extend the timeout over a weekend away from the routines of home.

Earlier last month, I checked into the Aleenta Phuket-Phang Nga Resort & Spa to check out its new Wellness Suites retreat – an all-inclusive package that includes accommodation in the ocean view lofts or pool suites, carbon-free healthy meals, daily massages and of course, daily yoga. The luxurious beachfront property is located on Natai Beach, and tucked away from all the tourist hustle and bustle – perfect for a restful getaway.

For three blissful days, I fell asleep and woke to the sound of waves, and greeted the sunrise while strolling barefoot along the private beach to the yoga studio, where my sweet instructor Duang led me through morning flow sequences that both challenged and soothed, energizing both body and mind.

As the old adage goes, you are what you eat, and food plays an important part in the Wellness Suites retreat. Guests are served healthy, spa cuisine inspired dishes, but rest assured that it isn’t all raw greens and bland oats. On the contrary, executive chef Jean-Louis Leon has quite the magic touch, creating dishes that are both healthy and full on flavour. Case in point, his breakfast dish of kaffir-scented couscous stirred through with fresh and dried fruit and roasted coconut – simple, creative and such a pleasure to eat. I was so taken, I begged him to share his recipe. (Stay tuned for the recipe next week!)

And what’s a holiday without some serious pampering at the spa? Apart from daily body massages by very competent therapists at the resort’s new Ayurah Wellness Centre, the package comes with a complimentary health assessment, as well as 30-minute sessions at the O2 Bar, where pure oxygen is inhaled through small tubes – a practice that brings about benefits like reduced stress, increased energy and better brain power. The spa is also the only place in Thailand to offer a range of skincare products and therapies by UK celebrity facialist Linda Meredith.

Sun, sand and crystal clear waters, plus good food, great yoga and pampering treatments at the spa. Now how’s that as an idea for your next long weekend?

Vacation tip: Plan your trip to coincide with the resort’s monthly fitness workshop. According to the spa director (who interestingly used to be a group fitness instructor), ideas he has up his sleeve include beach boot camp – something endorphin-seeking yogis may enjoy.
