Mindfulness is the state of being present—sensing and observing our awareness with a single-pointed focus. The intricate marriage of breath and movement is a powerful combination in helping us find our state of mindfulness, wherever we may be. In this training, Angie seeks to empower you to find your state of mindful flow on the mat and beyond, and for you to empower those around you to do the same.

With a holistic approach in understanding the Vinyasa practice, we will take a deep dive into the physiology of yoga, and how greater technical understanding of our body and the way we move can transform our practice and the way we teach. This training is designed to challenge you to seek greater knowledge in yoga history and humanities, anatomy and biomechanics, yoga asanas underpinning the vinyasa practice, as well as teaching methods honed and refined by Angie after nearly a decade of teaching multiple immersions, teacher trainings, courses, and workshops.

This training is open to all levels of practitioners in any stage of your yoga journey who are keen and committed to deepen your knowledge of the practice. Angie would like to invite you to attend any of her group classes to experience her teaching style prior to joining the training.

This training is split into 5 module types:

  • Asana
  • Yoga Humanities
  • Anatomy and Biomechanics
  • Teaching Methodology
  • Special Module: Yoga Therapeutics

I. Mindfulness in Flow: Asana Modules

There will be a set sequence in this training that will help us ground our discussions and understanding around some of the key movements underpinning the Vinyasa practice. The poses in the set sequence will adequately cover the key movements in standing, seated, prone, and supine poses, together with some basic arm balances and inversions. Additionally, we will also be looking at Sun Salutation A, B, and C in our training.

In the asana modules, we will be looking at technique and alignment of these poses, as well as physical conditioning with the use of props such as blocks, straps, sliders and resistance bands. We will also experiment with different props in our practice to modify and adapt the practice to students with different needs.

II. Mindfulness in Tradition: Yoga Humanities

In the humanities modules, we will study the history and lineage behind the Vinyasa practice, and know some of the key figures that shaped Yoga to what it is today. We will also be looking at some of the texts such as the Yoga Sutra of Patanjali, the Bhagavad Gita, as well as the Upanishads.

The Humanities modules seek to ground our understanding of yoga beyond the mat, how the practice of yoga extends beyond the physical postures and to our daily lives through the study and discussions of some of the required readings in the training. These modules will help shape a greater understanding and appreciation of the history and traditions underpinning yoga, on and off the mat. These key concepts will be approached in an easily accessible and digestible manner.

III. Mindfulness in Movement: Anatomy and Biomechanics

The heart of Angie’s teaching philosophy, we will spend a lot of time understanding the beauty and complexity of human movement and biomechanics, and its power in ensuring a safe and injury-free practice.

We will be learning about the skeletal and musculature of the human body, and its relevance in the Vinyasa practice. Each weekend will take on an anatomical focus that will ground our asana practice as well as our anatomy lectures. We will also be looking at the central nervous system, the respiratory system, as well as the cardiovascular system, and how all these systems affect one another synergistically.

IV. Mindfulness in Empowerment: Teaching Methodology

Molded and refined over nearly a decade of teaching yoga, Angie’s teaching method is broken down into an easily understood and systematic manner that is designed to empower you to lead your students safely and confidently. A strong proponent of safe techniques, functional alignment, and an inclusive practice, Angie’s teaching methods will help you craft impactful classes that will continually draw your students back on the mat.

You will also have ample opportunities to practice teaching in a room, whether it is in a private 1 on 1 setting, or a small group setting. With individualised feedback and a safe space to grow and explore your teaching style, you will be well supported in your journey of finding your own teaching voice.

V. Special Module: Yoga Therapeutics

The Yoga Therapeutics module is designed to hone your skills as a yoga teacher adept at crafting impactful classes that are accessible to all. Whether it is distilling key anatomical concepts and techniques across yoga poses, or understanding common injuries often seen in the yoga practice, these modules seek to level up your teaching and skill sets prior to graduation.

Art of Yoga: A Functional Approach to the Vinyasa Practice

Understand common injuries that typically happen in the yoga practice, how we can relook at some of the common misalignment cues still prevalent as teaching cues, and how we can manage these injuries in our classes. We look closely into some of the common injuries that occur in the yoga practice, namely the lower back, the sacroiliac (SI) joint, shoulders, and wrists.

By having a deeper understanding of the functional anatomy of these specific areas of the body, we explore how we can manage these injuries in the yoga setting to ensure a safe and inclusive practice for all through our sequencing, verbal cues, and physical adjustments.

Angie's approach to the vinyasa practice emphasises heavily on anatomy and functional alignment. She strongly believes that advanced yoga poses can only be safely achieved through greater mastery of the simplest of poses and the smallest of details that comes with it. Her area of interest lies in anatomy and biomechanics underpinning the yoga practice, heavily influenced by her training with Jason Crandell. She seeks to ground her classes firmly in anatomical understanding, whether it is through her own further studies, or through consultations and ongoing education with physiotherapists, osteopaths, and exercise physiologists. She is also currently spending her time at a physiotherapist clinic to learn more about injuries and rehabilitation in a clinical setting.

In all her classes and trainings, she strives to teach in a systematic and easily understood manner. Her trainings are crafted with the intention to provide teachers and students with specialised knowledge and instill greater confidence in them to embark on teaching yoga. Through her experience in leading multiple teacher trainings over the years, she believes in the importance of providing students with ongoing support and opportunities to further their growth beyond a standard 200-hr yoga teacher training curriculum, as well as the importance of having basic anatomical awareness underpinning the yoga practice to ensure a sustainable and injury-free practice.
