New Beginnings: A Practice of Reflection, Release and Alignment with JY Ooi, Jan 4
Orchard Central
Sunday, January 4, 2026
10am - 11.30am
Each New Year is a valuable opportunity to reflect on the year that has passed, and set intentions for the coming year.
This New Year, JY invites you to this unique practice that encourages deep self-reflection and supports clarity and personal growth. This 90-minute class includes a short dharma talk and guided meditation, a gentle asana practice featuring hatha and restorative elements, followed by a guided journalling practice.
As the practice unfolds, you will be invited to move slowly and deliberately, using breath-led movement to clear mental residue and emotional heaviness accumulated over the past year. The flow is not about striving or performing, but about creating enough inner silence to notice what has been ignored or forgotten. The restorative segment will offer space for deeper settling, allowing the body to soften and the mind to become more receptive. In this quieter place, insights often arise naturally.
You will be invited to recognise the weight you may still be carrying from the past year, to let go of patterns or narratives that no longer serve you, and to acknowledge the realities that cannot be changed. Through this honest inner work, space opens for acceptance and a softer relationship with yourself. From that grounded place, you will be guided to listen inwardly, understand or realise what truly matters, and shape intention(s) that aligns with your deeper values and sense of authenticity, rather than external expectations.
The journalling component will help you articulate these insights with clarity, offering time to explore how your intention(s) can gently inform the choices, boundaries and energies you bring forth in the year ahead. Whether you are a seasoned practitioner or new to yoga, this session creates space to meet yourself sincerely, honour the past with compassion, and step into the coming year with steadiness, openness and renewed purpose.
You may find clarity about what you wish to invite into your life, the habits you want to nurture, and the qualities that support the person you are becoming. This class offers a gentle container to honour these discoveries and begin the year with intention, honesty and a renewed sense of alignment.

ABOUT JY OOI
JY started practising yoga in 2014 and teaching in 2017. He believes that a yoga practice can be the basis for self-actualisation and personal development, and that it should ideally be less performative and more internal.
Trained and certified in a variety of yoga styles, JY has found that the practices of yin yoga and meditation have most informed his personal practice and outlook on teaching. He has in recent years delved into associated domains such as mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR), Vipassana meditation and trauma-informed yoga. He is transitioning to teaching with a greater emphasis on healing, therapeutic and meditative elements.
JY encourages practitioners to observe sensations, thoughts and their breath with a view to realising the impermanence thereof. The equanimity and insight that comes from realising no situation lasts forever is a window to deeper self-awareness and connection. He consciously aims to teach from a grounded space, offering supportive and encouraging classes that facilitate the connection of body and mind through the breath.
